Breast Cancer Recovery – can Pilates help?

Yes.

Pilates can help with your recovery.

Unfortunately, there is little awareness around the importance of movement post breast cancer.

If you have had a diagnosis of breast cancer you may have had breast surgery, treatment and reconstruction. At Glow, we understand this can be an overwhelming time and that you have lots of questions, but we are here to help.

Depending on your diagnosis you may have had a biopsy, lumpectomy or mastectomy. Any of these surgeries can affect your shoulder and arm movement. Sometimes surgery will require removal of axillary nodes from the armpit, sometimes leading to swelling and pain. After a partial or total mastectomy, you may find that your shoulder stiffens due to scar tissue.

This can make daily activities difficult – things like dressing yourself, having a shower, and brushing your hair. Research has shown that restriction of movement in the shoulder can persist 1 year after surgery in almost 25% of patients.
